Charlotte-area high school football games of the week

Providence (10-3) at Mallard Creek (12-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m.: Mallard Creek is two wins away from a second straight state final appearance. Providence is in the quarterfinals for the first time in 11 years and won a second-round game at East Forsyth, the No. 1 overall 4AA Western seed, last week without starting quarterback Caleb York (broken collarbone).

Hough (10-3) at Lake Norman (12-1), Friday, 7:30: Both teams are among the hottest in North Carolina. Since Hough lost 27-17 to Independence on Sept. 19, the Huskies are 8-1. The loss was 37-30 to Mallard Creek and Hough led 30-0. Lake Norman, which had never won a playoff game before this season, has won 10 in a row and is three games away from a state title.

Rocky River (9-4) at Vance (10-3), Friday, 7:30: We know one Mecklenburg County team will play in next week’s N.C. 4A Western Regional final. Vance has won two straight despite being a little sloppy with the ball. Rocky River has allowed 17 points during a three-game win streak.

Charlotte Catholic (12-1) at Pfafftown Reagan (12-1), Friday, 7:30: First-year coach Mike Brodowicz has the Cougars on a nine-game win streak and in a familiar spot – playing for a 4A regional berth. Reagan has won nine straight and averages 42 points per game.
