Charlotte Latin boys return to Observer Sweet 16

North Mecklenburg’s girls and Charlotte Latin’s boys move into the Observer’s Sweet 16 basketball rankings this week.

Latin, ranked in the preseason, returned to the boys poll.

North Meck (4-0) hasn’t been ranked in the girls poll this season, but zooms in at No. 9, where the Vikings are tied with West Charlotte. That’s a higher-than-normal debut, but the Vikings impressed voters by winning the Leroy Holden holiday tournament at North Meck in impressive fashion last week.

North Meck beat Mooresville 61-36 and beat then-top 10 Sweet 16 team Lake Norman Charter 67-38 in the championship game.

Charlotte Latin (2-2) has lost to private-school power Greensboro Day and Sweet 16 No. 4 Myers Park (76-71) but has been impressive against a tough early season schedule. The Hawks play rival Charlotte Catholic at home Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the polls, Providence Day’s boys – playing one of the toughest schedules in North Carolina – moved up to No. 2 after wins against Tennessee power Hamilton Heights and Hough, which dropped three spotsto No. 5. And Weddington’s girls moved up to No. 2 after a 44-35 victory at Ardrey Kell, which fell a spotto No. 3.
