With two weeks left in the N.C. high school football season, eight Observer-area teams are still alive in the chase for state championships.
Seven of them are ranked in this week’s Sweet 16 poll. Two are new: No. 15 Mount Pleasant is in a regional final for the first time since 2007 and will play at Shelby, the reigning 2A state champion. Tied with Mount Pleasant at No. 15 is another new team to the poll.
Cuthbertson (11-3) started the year 1-3 but has won 10 straight to reach the state semifinals. Cuthbertson will host Union County rival Weddington on Friday.
Mallard Creek remained No. 1 and will play Lake Norman, which has become the Cinderella story of these playoffs. Lake Norman had never won a playoff game before this season but has eliminated three straight Mecklenburg County opponents – West Charlotte, Ardrey Kell and Hough – to reach the state semifinals.
Lake Norman will host the regional championship game Friday.
