Regional Final Matchups

No. 1 Mallard Creek (13-1) at No. 7 Lake Norman (13-1)

Mallard Creek hasn’t lost to a non-Mecklenburg County team since the end of the 2011 season, winning nine straight. The Mavericks are in their fourth straight regional final, seeking a second straight N.C. 4AA state finals appearance. Lake Norman had never won a playoff game before this season but has ridden a magical year from N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year Josh Ladowski to its first regional final.

No. 11 Vance (11-3) at No. 3 Charlotte Catholic (13-1)

Vance is in the regional final for the first time since 2010. They have plenty of offensive weaponry: Vance QB Omar Baker has thrown for 2,275 yards and 26 touchdowns and rushed for 1,143 yards and 12 touchdowns. Vance tailback Donnovan Spencer has rushed for 1,686 yards and 15 scores. Wide receiver Myles Dorn has 64 catches for 1,105 yards and 14 scores.

No. 6 Weddington (13-1) at No. 16 Cuthbertson (11-3)

These rivals are only 3.45 miles apart and should draw a huge crowd for a Union County regional final. Cuthbertson upset Weddington 42-38 on Oct. 17 and has rallied from a 1-3 start behind junior QB Austin Kendall, who has committed to Tennessee and thrown for 4,143 yards and 46 touchdowns. The yardage is No. 1 in North Carolina.

South Point (10-4) at Crest (14-0)

Crest beat South Point 35-13 to start the season. South Point started 1-3 but has rebounded to reach the state semifinals and hunt the school’s fourth state finals appearance and its first since 2009.

Franklin (14-0) at No. 10 East Lincoln (14-0)

Franklin’s defense allows 11 points per game, but it will be tested by East Lincoln QB Chazz Surratt, who has thrown for a state-best 49 TDs and 3,820 yards (second-best in the state).

No. 15 Mount Pleasant (12-2) at Shelby (12-2)

Mount Pleasant is in the semifinals behind 3,000-yard rusher Cody Reece for the first time since 2007 – when Shelby eliminated Mount Pleasant in the regional round.
