Charlotte’s premier high school basketball tournament is underdoing another name change, but again it will bring some of the nation’s top players and teams to town.
The first Hoodies House High School Hoops Classic will be Dec. 27-30 at Ardrey Kell High. It formerly has been called the Dell Curry Shootout, the Bojangles’ Shootout and last year was the Wild Wing Cafe High School Hoops Classic. USA Today once called the event the nation’s No. 1 post-Christmas high school tournament.
Whatever the name, the tournament consistently has enticed top players, including current Charlotte Hornets guards Lance Stephenson and Gerald Henderson, Portland Trail Blazer LaMarcus Aldridge, WNBA All-Star Maya Moore and Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry.
This year’s event will have a four-team girls’ field, a four-team local/regional tournament and an eight-team boys’ national tournament. More than 30 major college recruits will participate.
In the boys’ national field, John Carroll (Md.) High is ranked No. 24 nationally by USA Today and two teams will be in the field that finished among the top 10 last season: White Station (Tenn.) and Charlotte’s Northside Christian.
Boys’ national field teams: Providence Day, White Station (Tenn.), Dillard (Fla.), Luella (Ga.), John Carroll (Md.), Northside Christian, St. James (Md.), Morgan County (Ga.)
Boys’ local/regional teams: Lake Norman, Concord, Ardrey Kell, Victory Christian
Girls’ teams: Ardrey Kell, Davidson Day, Norcoss, Northside Christian
