The top six girls’ high school basketball teams remain the same in this week’s Sweet 16, but there’s a mighty shuffle below them.
A lot of ranked teams suffered losses last week, which opened the door for two hot teams to join the poll. South Mecklenburg (13-6) has won three straight and rejoins the Sweet 16 at No. 14. Gastonia’s Ashbrook High (12-3) is in at No. 16. The Green Wave has won five consecutive games.
The shuffling also allowed three teams to make big jumps: Mallard Creek went from No. 13 to No. 8, Monroe moved from 16th to ninth and Rock Hill South Pointe, the No. 6-ranked team in South Carolina, moved from 12th to seventh.
