Last week, when Houston hired Major Applewhite to be its next head college football coach, I got a call from former Providence Day athletics director Bill Rogers.

Turns out that Applewhite and Houston athletics director Hunter Yurachek both attended Providence Day while Rogers worked at the southeast Charlotte private school.

Yurachek graduated from Providence Day and played for back-to-back state championship teams, in 1985 and ‘86, under head coach Dave Price.

Applewhite went to elementary school at Providence Day, Rogers said, and he played Pop Warner football at SouthPark before his family moved to Baton Rogue, La., where he attended high school before playing quarterback at Texas under former North Carolina head coach Mack Brown.

Rogers was at Providence Day from 1984-93.
