Piedmont High’s softball state championship dream came to an end Saturday in Raleigh.
After losing Game 1 of the best-of-3 3A finals series with Hillsborough Orange Friday night by a score of 3-2, Piedmont fell 4-1 in the deciding Game 2 at N.C. State.
The two schools had met in the N.C. 3A dual-team wrestling championship in February, which Piedmont won.
On Saturday, Mia Davidson got a leadoff walk for Orange and after Abigail Hamlett singled, Jaden Hurdle smacked a two-run RBI single. Piedmont closed to wihtin 2-1 in the third after Kyrah Phelix, daughter of Piedmont coach Jason Phelix, got a leadoff single.

Phelix advanced on Kristen DelBene’s two-out single, and Gracie Gibon’s single sent Phelix across the plate.
But in the seventh and final inning, Orange got two more runs on Hamlett’s two-out double. Davidson, the championship MVP, scored one of the two runs after walking.
For the game, Piedmont got six hits from Phelix, DelBene, Gibson, Maddi Hinson, Leigha Helms and Sara Griffin.
