North Stanly wins NCHSAA 1A state softball championship

North Stanly won its first N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship Saturday night.

After the teams split the first two games of the best-of-3 championship series, North Stanly beat Whiteville 4-2 in the deciding Game Three. The game went 11 inning, four innings past regulation.

Merris Talbert went 11 innings for the Comets. She had eight strikeouts and allowed just two runs and seven hits. Whiteville’s Ivy Hayes who also went 11-innings, giving up 12 hits, and four runs, all earned. Hayes only walked one while striking out eight.

The two pitchers controlled the game until the final inning. In the top of the 11th, Payton Landis led off with a single for North Stanly. Alex Sells’ home run gave North Stanly a 3-1 lead. Sells was named championship MVP for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

After the big hit, Mimi Selke reached on a single for North Stanly and was knocked home by Jada Jordan. Whiteville scored one run in the bottom of the 11th inning, but Talbert struck out the final two batters to close out the championship.
