Ahlana Smith, Mallard Creek girls basketball: rising senior committed to UCLA after averaging 16.5 points, four assists and four rebounds for the state semifinalists. Smith was an All-District and Observer All-Mecklenburg pick. She is ranked No. 32 nationally by Prospects Nation. Smith is the top-ranked player from North Carolina.

Cox Mill volleyball: Chargers haven’t lost since Halloween of 2015 and are the reigning N.C. 3A state champs. After finishing in the top 10 nationally last season (MaxPreps), they return All-American Taylor Rowland plus three other players with major college offers. Cox Mill is scheduled to start its season Saturday in the Best of NC Tournament.

National Federation Of High Schools: Recently adopted resolution asking college and pro teams to not schedule games on Friday nights. It resolved that “every Friday night during the fall in America is ‘High School Football Night.’” It said by colleges and pros avoiding Fridays “would be an investment in their own future success.”

College football on Fridays: More than 50 major college football games will be played on Fridays this year, including eight on Sept. 1.
