Myers Park, West Meck rise, two new teams bolt into Observer Sweet 16 football poll

In 1996, West Mecklenburg quarterback Joe Evans looked for room to run as Myers Park's Brandon Boswell (52) moves in to tackle. West Meck won 18-6. Evans is now a Mustangs assistant coach and both schools are top 5 in this week’s Observer Sweet 16 poll

Since the Sweet 16 high school football poll began 33 years ago, Myers Park and West Mecklenburg haven’t been ranked nearly as much as some of their peers in and around Charlotte.

Myers Park has had seven winning seasons since the Sweet 16 poll began. West Meck has had more than twice that many in the same span, but since a series of six straight winning seasons from 1986-91 under former head coach Jim Hambacher, the Hawks have had a tougher run – 10 winning seasons in 26 years. And in six of those years, the Hawks had two victories or fewer.

This week, both teams are ranked in the top five of the poll. Myers Park is No. 4, one spot ahead of West Mecklenburg.

Myers Park (2-0) has had back-to-back winning seasons under coach Scott Chadwick, in his fourth season and working on leading Myers Park to its first run of three straight winning seasons since the 1970s.

West Mecklenburg (2-0) is working on back-to-back winning seasons under coach Jarvis Davis and a fourth winning season in six years.

▪ Two new teams join the poll this week: Cabarrus County power Hickory Ridge is in at No. 13. The Ragin’ Bulls are averaging more than 40 points per game. Also in the poll is No. 16 Weddington. The reigning N.C. 3AA champions shut out Ardrey Kell 31-0 in their season-opener Friday.
