Charlotte Latin took a young football team to Virginia Saturday hoping for a spark.
Hawks coach Larry McNulty felt his team got one, getting a 28-21 win over Woodberry Forest (VA) Saturday. Woodberry (0-2) is coached by former Olympic High coach Scott Braswell.
Charlotte Latin got 270 yards total offense from Martin Sumicrast, including a passing touchdown and rushing touchdown. Demarkes Stradford had 164 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Latin (2-0) rallied from a 14-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to win and set up next week’s showdown between the Hawks, the reigning N.C. Independent Schools Division I state champions and Division III state champion Statesville Christian (3-0). The teams meet Friday at Charlotte Latin.
No. 1 Rock Hill South Pointe 45, Rock Hill 9: Four Stallions starters were disciplined and didn’t start -- Eli Adams, BJ Davis, Steven Gilmore Jr. and Clemson commit Derion Kendrick. Without four of its key players, South Pointe started slow but had a big third quarter spurt to bust the game open. South Pointe hasn’t lost to Rock Hill since 2009 and the Stallions defense made sure that streak didn’t end Saturday. Rock Hill managed 97 rushing yards on 43 attempts. Kendrick led South Pointe with 94 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
