High School Girls Basketball Team Previews: S.C. schools

ANDREW JACKSON

Head Coach: ShaRon Robertson (2nd year as Andrew Jackson basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 18-8 (10-2 to win Region IV, AA title).

2017-18 Conference: Region IV, AA.

Returning Starters (3): Danielle Ussery, Sr., G (5-6); Raegan Brewer, Sr., G (5-4); Makyalen Crosby, Sr., F (5-9). Key Newcomers: Osha Black, So., G (5-2); Mackenzie Marshall, Fr., PF (5-10).

Outlook: The Andrew Jackson girls’ basketball tradition has established a winning tradition with 39 victories in the past two years, including a trip to the AA state semifinals last season before losing to Christ Church Episcopal by 38 points. The Volunteers will have plenty of motivation, especially seniors, Ussery (13 ppg), Crosby (6 rpg) and Brewer, who are eager to win another region title in the process of trying to get a chance to play in the AA state championship game in their final high school season.

CHERAW

Head Coach: Rhonda Wallace (2nd year as Cheraw basketball coach).

Coaching Career Record: 53-63.

2016-17 Record: 14-9 (9-3 in S.C. Region IV, AA).

2017-18 Conference: S.C. Region IV, AA.

Returning Starters (5): Callie Bryant, Jr., G (5-7); Daebreon McIver, Sr., PG (5-5); Ania Waiters, Sr., G/F; Precious Spurlock, Sr., F; Kristina McCray, Sr., C/F.

Other Key Returnees: Antaivia Brown, So., PG. Key Newcomers: Harmonie Gearlds.

Outlook: The Braves doubled their win total from 2015-16, winning 14 games, finishing region runner-up to Andrew Jackson last year. This year, the up-tempo team returns all five starters led by their backcourt in Bryant and McIver. Cheraw, whose core has played together since the 7th-grade, is prime to challenge for a region title and go further into the AA playoffs (lost in the 2nd round last year).

CHESTER

Head Coach: Selena Gray (1st year as interim head coach; 9 years as an assistant).

2016-17 Record: 2-17 (1-7 in Region IV, AAA)

2017-18 Conference: Region IV, AAA).

Returning Starters (4): Kadijah Woods, Sr., F/C (6-1); LaTerriyah Tobias, Jr., G (5-5); Monique Griffin, So., G (5-5); Chantel Alexander, So., G (5-7). Key Newcomers: Ashanti Kelly, Fr., G (5-7); Deanna Lowery, So., F/C (6-4).

Outlook: After consistently being a .500 team, Chester struggled mightily last season going 2-17 and did not advance to the playoffs. But longtime assistant, now first-year head coach, Selena Gray, returns four starters led by senior, Woods, that should give the Cyclones a chance to move up the region standings and get back to being a factor in postseason play.

CLOVER

Head Coach: Sherer Hopkins (17th year as Clover basketball coach)

2016-17 Record: 16-9, (5-3 in Region IV, 5A).

2017-18 Conference: Region IV, 5A.

Returning Starters (4): Renee Carter, Sr., G/F (5-9); Aylesha Wade, Fr., G (5-6); Amber Lipscomb, Sr., G (5-6); Tiona Walls, Jr., G (5-7). Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: Coach Sherer Hopkins says "she has a great mix of veterans and younger players that love the game," back to a lead a Blue Eagle team that advanced to the AAAAA state quarterfinals last season. This season, Clover has the firepower led by all-region performers in Carter (11 ppg, 8 rpg) and Wade (12 ppg as an 8th grader) to battle Rock Hill for a region title and make another deep playoff run.

COMENIUS

Head Coach: Patty Cepeda (2nd year as Comenius basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 15-8 (6-0 to win Greater Charlotte Area Christian Schools Conference).

2017-18 Conference: Greater Charlotte Area Christian Schools Conference.

Returning Starters (4): Erin Cepeda, Sr., PG (5-6); Jessie Prescott, Jr., G (5-4); Rachel Lauka, So., F (5-9); Paola Martinez, Jr., G (5-5).

Other Key Returning Starters: Rachel Dinning, Jr., F (5-7). Key Newcomers: Naomi Moore, So., G (5-5); Monique Cepeda, Fr., G/F (5-7); Johnny Grace Garon, Fr., G (5-4); Rebecca Mossiman, Fr., F (5-7); Ronya White, So. G (5-4).

Outlook: The Knights had a season to remember last year with 15 wins and a Greater Charlotte Area Christian Schools’ league title. With four starters back, led by Erin Cepeda (21.1 ppg), Comenius will look to have another banner year and challenge for another league championship.

FORT MILL

Head Coach: Brett Childers (5th year as Fort Mill basketball coach).

Coaching Career Record: 145-139.

2016-17 Record: 13-12 (3-5 in S.C. Region IV, AAAAA).

2017-18 Conference: S.C. Region IV, AAAAA).

Returning Starters (3): Unique Burch, So., G (5-5); Annika Ford, Jr. G (5-7); Wallace Cortazar, Jr., G (5-7). Key Newcomers: Khamara Patterson, Sr., F (6-0) (Rocky River transfer).

Outlook: Fort Mill has some key pieces back in their backcourt in Burch, Cortazar and Ford, and a promising frontcourt transfer in Patterson. But, the Yellow Jackets are in one of the toughest regions (Region IV, AAAAA) in the state and making a move up the standings won’t be easy with state powers Rock Hill and Clover in the mix. Fort Mill will battle to finish in the middle of the region and get back to the playoffs.

GREAT FALLS

Head Coach: Randy Worthy (2nd year as Great Falls’ basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 7-12 (3-7 in S.C. Region II, A)

2017-18 Conference: S.C. Region II, A

Returning Starters (5): Hayva Trotter, Sr., C (6-0); Zy Adams, Jr., G/F (5-6); Jazmine Floyd, Jr., SG (5-6); Tamiya Cloud, Jr., F (5-7); Anaya Canty, So., G/F (5-8). Key Newcomers: Taniya Woods, Fr., F (5-8); Ayanna Kennedy, Fr., PG (5-0).

Outlook: The Red Devils haven’t had a winning season in nearly a decade (2007-08). But with five starters returning, led by all-region center, Trotter, Great Falls will have a chance to move up the Region II (A) standings and try to put themselves in the playoff picture.

INDIAN LAND

Head Coach: Natasha Rogers (7th year as Indian Land basketball coach).

Coaching Career Record: 49-54.

2016-17 Record: 11-9 (6-2 in the S.C. Region IV, AAA).

2017-18 Conference: S.C. Region IV, AAA.

Returning Starters (0): None. Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: Indian Land faces a major challenge after losing all five starters to graduation. However, Coach Rogers is a proven winner and will find a way to rebuild her team and get the most of her talent in a competitive, Region IV, AAA.

LANCASTER

Head Coach: Ronnie Robinson (14th year as Lancaster basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 7-12 (4-6 in Region III, AAAA).

2017-18 Conference: Region III, AAAA.

Returning Starters (5): Zaria Woods, Sr., F/C (5-10); Keiana Howze, Sr., G (5-6); Tikyevah Tookey Mackey, Jr., G; Shyniyah Winfield, Jr., PG; Summer Clinton, Sr., SG Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: The Bruins are only two seasons removed from their perfect 27-0, S.C. AAA state championship run. But last year was a struggle a 7-12. However, Coach Ronnie Robinson has all five starters back, led by seniors in Woods (14 ppg, 8 rpg) and Howze (7 ppg) which gives Lancaster the experience and talent to get back in contention for region and even a state championship.

LEWISVILLE

Head Coach: Tearia McCrorey (3rd year as Lewisville basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 6-15 (4-6 Region II, 1A).

2017-18 Conference: Region II, 1A.

Returning Starters (5): Amber Bass, Jr., PF (5-11); Hannah McCallister, Sr., SF (5-10); Katlyn Fosset, Jr., SG (5-4); Allie Keels, So., C (5-11); Blakely Elliot, So., PG (5-3). Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: The Lions have taken steps in the right direction in each of Coach McCrorey’s season in charge. This season, could be Lewisville’s breakout campaign as junior forward, Amber Bass (15.5 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.9 spg) headlines a squad with all five starters back, that eager to move up the region standings and challenge for a playoff berth.

NATION FORD

Head Coach: Kate Edwards (2nd year as Nation Ford basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 17-8 (4-4 in the Region IV, AAAAA).

2017-18 Conference: Region IV, AAAAA.

Returning Starters (5): Ellona Moulds, Jr., PG (5-6); Makayla Blackwell, Jr., SF (5-7); Kelci Adams, So., SG (5-8); Sami Tuipulotu, Sr., C (5-10); Alexis Clement, Sr., PF (5-1). Key Newcomers: Victoria Jordan, Fr., PF (5-10).

Outlook: Nation Ford made a huge jump in Coach Kate Edwards’ first season going from seven wins in 2015-16 to 17 victories last year. The Falcons should be even better this year with all five starters back led by seniors, Tuipulotu and Clement, who are eager to challenge for a region title and go deeper into the playoffs (2nd round last year).

ROCK HILL

Head Coach: Kennan (Kenny) Orr (7th year as Rock Hill basketball coach)

Coaching Career Record: 95-56.

2016-17 Record: 20-5 (10-0 in S.C. Region IV, AAAAA).

2017-18 Conference: S.C. Region IV, AAAA

Returning Starters (4): RiKoya Anderson, Sr., SF (5-9); Jasona "Tee" Ballard, Sr., G/F (5-10); Makenna Thompson, Sr., G (5-5); Abriana Greene, Jr., F (5-7). Key Newcomers: Dynasty Pichardo, So., F (5-8); Jalen Armstrong, Jr., G (5-5); Ashley Crank, Jr., G (5-6); Amya Wise, So., F (5-10).

Outlook: Coach Kennan Orr returns a veteran team with eight seniors that have won 64 games in the last three years, spending time at No. 1 in the state in each of the last two seasons. Now, Rock Hill’s goal is to finish the season at No. 1 and they have the talent in seniors, Anderson (Region IV, AAAAA player of the year, 17 ppg, 10 rpg 3 spg), Ballard (10 ppg, 8 rpg) and Thompson (11 ppg) to be a region and state championship contender.

SOUTH POINTE (SC)

Head Coach: Stephanie Butler (5th year as South Pointe (SC) basketball coach).

Coaching Career Record: 176-61.

2016-17 Record: 6-15 (1-9 in the Region III, AAAA).

2017-18 Conference: Region III, AAAA.

Returning Starters (3): Jamia Blake, So., G (5-8); Scarlett Gilmore, Jr., G (5-7); Jonna Roberson, Sr., G/F (5-7). Key Newcomers: Trinity Adams, Fr., G (5-9); Makayla Jamerson, Fr., G/F (5-11).

Outlook: Coach Stephanie Butler led South Pointe to 50 wins in the first three years of her tenure, before slipping to 6-15 last year. This season, the Stallions look to climb back up the Region III, AAAA standings led by the all-region backcourt duo of Blake (14.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg) and Gilmore (12.4 ppg), both Division I recruits. South Pointe will go as far as their guards can take them, and hope that will include a postseason run.

YORK

Head Coach: Jordan McCoy (1st year as York girls’ basketball coach, 8th year overall).

2016-17 Record: 9-13 (1-9 in Region III, 4A).

2017-18 Conference: Region III, 4A.

Returning Starters (3): Natalee Graham, Sr., SG; Jaleah Long, Jr., G; Ramsay Green, Jr., PG. Key Newcomers: Kiersten McFadden, So., G/F.

Outlook: The Cougars were up and down last season, but struggled in region play last. But 1st-year coach, Jordan McCoy, has the pieces in all-region senior, Graham (13 ppg) and gets his point guard in Green back from injury, which should allow York to move up the league standings and contend for a postseason berth.

YORK PREP

Head Coach: Marcus Benjamin (1st year as York Prep basketball coach).

2016-17 Record: 11-18.

2017-18 Conference: None/Independent.

Returning Starters (3): Jermany Mapp, So., G (5-8); Samitra Brown, Jr., G (5-6); Kathryn Williams, So., G (5-3).

Other Key Returnees: Destiny Benjamin, Fr., G (5-9). Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: York Prep’s young team took its lumps at times last season with a sophomore, two freshmen and an 8th-grader in its regular rotation. But the still youthful, Patriot team is growing up together and has the pieces in Mapp (12 ppg), Brown, Williams and Benjamin to have a winning record and keep the program’s momentum rolling.
