After four seasons as head coach of Mallard Creek’s soccer team, Alex Hayner has resigned. He will remain on staff as a teacher.

Hayner said he plans to pursue a master’s in education from UNC Charlotte and that he is a new father who wants to spend more time with his daughter.

In four seasons, Hayner’s teams were 45-42-5, with four state playoff appearances. Mallard Creek a conference championship in 2015, the same year Hayner was named a Positive Coaching Alliance “Double Gold” national medal winner.

“Losing Coach Hayner is tough,” Mavericks athletics director Philip Davanzo said “He has done a great job with our program. I fully support both his professional and personal goals. I am very excited that we are able to retain him as an educator because he does an amazing job in the classroom.”

Hayner will be replaced by David Basinger, Mallard Creek’s girls’ head coach.

“Basinger brings so much knowledge and experience to the program, from his days at South Iredell,” Davanzo said. “This will be a very smooth transition, as Basinger served as our JV Coach this fall.”
