Monday’s Roundup: Hough gets big soccer win

Hough launched its I-Meck 4A Conference season Monday evening with a 4-1 victory over visiting Hopewell.

The Huskies (5-3 overall) got two goals from Ryan Cowie and single scores from Adam Jeffrey and Nick Pino.

Vance 1, Mallard Creek 0: The Cougars’ Emmanuel Muin II scored the game’s only goal. Mallard Creek goalkeeper Melvin Rivera made seven saves, and Vance’s Roberto Serna had five saves.

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Indian Trail Porter Ridge 2, East Mecklenburg 1 (OT): The surging Pirates scored in the first overtime for the victory. Miguel Salgado had East Mecklenburg’s goal.

Myers Park 9, Garinger 0: Colin Perrin scored two goals, Samuel Bass had a goal and two assists, and Carter Hensley had two assists for the Mustangs.

Southern Pines Pinecrest 3, Lumberton 0

BIG SOUTH 3A

Gastonia Huss 3, North Gaston 1: Anthony Perez scored two goals for the Huskies. Emerson Sandoval added a Huss goal, and Antonio Vargas scored for North Gaston.

SOUTHERN CAROLINA 3A

Charlotte Catholic 3, Waxhaw Cuthbertson 0: The Cougars bounced back from their 2-0 loss Saturday to Providence, behind Patrick Fenton’s two goals. Fenton now has nine goals on the season.

Salisbury 3, Winston-Salem Oak Grove 1: The visiting Hornets got goals from Angel Quintero, Dennis Anaya and Juan Salazar, improving to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Lenoir Hibriten 5, East Burke 1: Kevin Pineda led the Panthers with three goals.

Newton Fred T. Foard 5, Valdese Draughn 0: The Tigers did all their scoring in the first half.

East Lincoln 6, Lake Norman Charter 2: The visiting Mustangs were led by Chase Gilley (three goals) and twin brother Logan (two goals, one assist).

North Lincoln 5, West Lincoln 0: Christian Delaney scored twice for the Knights.

PAC 1A

Mooresville Carolina International 7, Mooresville Bradford Prep 4: This was a 2-2 match at halftime. The host Comets won behind Judah Price (three goals) and Mark Sanders (two goals, two assists).

Mooresville Pine Lake Prep 5, Mooresville Langtree Charter 0: Colton Cox’s two goals led the Pride. Patrick Hannagan got the shutout in goal.

NONCONFERENCE

Cherryville 4, Pinnacle Classical Academy 0: Chase McNeil’s two goals led the Ironmen.

Concord 9, East Rowan 0: Austin Powell and David Juarez each scored twice, and Gabriel Dennett had six saves in goal.

Concord First Assembly 4, Fort Mill Comenius 1: First Assembly scored three times in the second half, improving to 6-2 on the season.

East Montgomery 1, Cameron Union Pines 1

East Rutherford 7, Bakersville Mitchell County 2: The visiting Cavaliers built a 4-0 halftime lead.

Kannapolis Brown 2, North Iredell 0: Jonathan Duarte and Axel Martinez scored second-half goals for the Wonders.

Cross country

Weddington and Waxhaw Cuthbertson captured the top honors Friday in the Friday Night Lights Meet at Redmon Park in Kernersville. The Weddington boys took the Championship level title, with Cuthbertson doing the same in the girls’ Championship race.

In the Invitational division, Marvin Ridge was the boys’ winner, while Covenant Day took the girls’ title.

In the boys’ Championship race, Joey Brown of Cary Panther Creek won in a time of 15:49.4 over 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). Kyle Durham of Weddington was third, in 15:56.5, and teammate Nate Jaster took fourth.

The girls’ Championship winner was Carmen Alder of Southern Pines Pinecrest, in a time of 18:22.9. Madeline Hill of Cuthbertson was third (18:51.7) and Sophia Ritter of Boone Watauga was fifth.

Cooper Castellaw of Alexander Central won the boys’ Invitational event in 16:40.6. Top area finisher in the girls’ Invitational was Gastonia Highland Tech’s Lauren Tolbert.

Alexander Central 3, West Caldwell 0: The Cougars improved to 4-1 in the conference, sweeping 25-13, 25-6 and 25-7.

Hickory 3, McDowell 0: The Red Tornadoes improved to 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference, rolling 25-10, 25-9 and 25-9.

Hickory St. Stephens 3, Morganton Freedom 0: The hosts won 25-19, 27-25 and 25-12. Ally Day had eight digs and two aces, and Kenley Killian had 15 assists and two aces.

Olympic 3, East Mecklenburg 2: The Trojans (2-13) upset the visiting Eagles (5-5).

South Mecklenburg 3, Hopewell 0: The Sabres swept 25-21, 25-17 and 25-13.

South Stanly 3, Marshville Forest Hills 1: Audrey Nance had 29 assists for Forest Hills.

Statesville Christian 3, Mooresville Pine Lake Prep 1: After the Pride won the third set 25-18 and closed to 2-1, the Lions won its 25-18.

Unionville Piedmont 3, West Stanly 1: The Colts took the first set, but Piedmont then won 25-23, 25-16 and 25-21.
