1. We will find out a lot about Charlotte Catholic Friday.
The Cougars (4-1, 1-0 Southern Carolina 3A) returned 18 starters from an unbeaten 2017 state champion and didn’t back away from talk that this might be the best Catholic team ever. Since then, Catholic lost its season opener, 6-0 to private school power Charlotte Christian, and has struggled at times offensively. Catholic , which will face unbeaten Weddington at home Friday, has been, in a word, uneven. Friday will be the game in which the Cougars will show if they truly have state championship stuff -- or not.
2. Charlotte Christian won’t have a close game until 2019.
No disrepect to any of the Knights’ remaining opponents, but Christian is outscoring teams by an average of 46-2. We don’t see anyone on the schedule - except maybe a resurgent Providence Day team - who can do much to change those numbers. Christian has shut out three of four opponents and won its past three games by a combined score of 179-7. If the Knights were a public school team in anything other than the 4AA class, trust us, they would be a state title favorite.
3. Hough will get a test against Mooresville and a chance to legitimize its ranking
Hough was a controversial preseason No. 1 in the Sweet 16, and the Huskies haven’t had a chance to prove just how good they are - until Friday. Hough’s opponents are 2-26 and have been outscored 1,100-368. Next up is 5-0 Mooresville, which averages 34 points per game. The Blue Devils are looking forward to a shot at knocking off No 1. Hough is looking forward to a chance to show its stuff.
4. Alexander Central at Watauga will be one of the most entertaining games of the night
Alexander (5-0) averages 54 points per game. Watauga (5-0) averages 45. Alexander is averaging more than 9 yards. Oh, Watauga is, too.
5. Someone will get the No. 2 playoff berth from the SoMeck 7
West Mecklenburg (4-1) is the only team in the SoMeck conference with a winning record, and the Hawks look like the clear league favorite. Other than West Meck, only Olympic (2-4) has more than one win. The conference gets two automatic berths. No. 2, folks, is up for grabs.
