Wrestling Roundup: pins lead Myers Park past Butler

Five Myers Park High wrestlers scored pins Wednesday night, leading the Mustangs to a 45-23 victory over Southwestern 4A Conference foe Butler.

The Mustangs got pins from Kaleb Barnes (132 pounds), Ryan Sklar (145), William Lowery (152), Nathan Glenn (160) and Gianmara Price (182).

Butler’s Noah Luna (113) took an 18-3 victory in his match.

In other wrestling from Wednesday night:

Ardrey Kell 54, South Mecklenburg 22: The Knights improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the SoMeck 7 4A.

Berry 48, Harding 18: Most of the matches were forfeited, but Harding’s Chancellor defeated Berry’s Tyree Copeland at 220 pounds.

Hickory St. Stephens 33, Newton-Conover 26: Dakota Metcalf won by pin at 195 pounds, and Salvador Gilvaja (220) took a 19-1 decision victory, lifting St. Stephens to victory. Blake Baker (138) and Metcalf were the pin winners for St. Stephens. Camden Spencer (106) won by pin for Newton-Conover.

Lake Norman 43, Mallard Creek 31: Braeden Hull (106), Kaiden Fisher (120), Orion Fisher (126), Slater McCray (138), Nathan Dugan (195) and Alex Baker (285) won by pin for Lake Norman. Mallard Creek got pin victories from Quantavius McNeil (132), Ethan Chenault (145), Alex Kata (182) and Marvin Rich (220).

Mooresville 46, Hough 27: Mooresville won five of the last six bouts and captured this I-Meck 4A match.

Porter Ridge 60, Independence 17: The most competitive match in this Southwestern 4A contest was at 195 pounds, where Independence’s Christopher Salazar edged Trevor Kupniwski 13-11.

Otherwise, the Pirates dominated, getting pins from Ryan Blanchard (106), Ericsson Cheek (113), Alex Gallagher (120), Drew Dickson (138) and Francis Gallagher (152). Daryl Bodrick (182) won by pin for Independence.


Lincolnton 84, Shelby 0: Evante Shuford (113), Esteban Hoyle (145) and Quinland Hunter (106) won by pin for the Wolves. Most of the bouts were forfeited by Shelby.

Lincolnton 75, Lenoir Hibriten 6: Quinlan Hunter (106), Dazjay Powell (126), Justin White (132), Alan Rojas (160), Mason Whitaker (170), Eduardo Mendez (220) and Bernard Wingate (285) won by pin for the Wolves. Max McMahan (113) scored a pin victory for Hibriten.

Morganton Freedom 54, Shelby 0: Fernando Soto-Luna (106), Davion Lowdermilk (113) and Javeon McMahan (145) won by pin for the Patriots.

Morganton Freedom 54, Lenoir Hibriten 24: Fernando Soto-Luna (106), Davion Lowdermilk (113), Jeris Hill (120), Brandon Lindsay (126), Clay Beach (132), Colby Miller (138), Jaxon McMahan (145), Spencer Leonhardt (152) and Wolfgang Wheeler (285) scored pins for the Patriots.
