Thursday’s swimming/wrestling roundup: local swimmers honored

Three Charlotte-area swimmers have been named Athletes of the Week by N.C. Prep Swimming.

Honored for their performances in meets last week were Hough’s Kensley Merritt, for 4A girls; Charlotte Catholic’s Olivia Rhodes, for 3A girls; and Marvin Ridge’s Boyd Poelke, for 3A boys.

Merritt won the 200-meter individual medley (2:13.03) and the 100-meter backstroke (57.53) in a meet against Lake Norman.

Rhodes and Poelke were honored for performances in a meet involving their teams and Weddington. Rhodes won the two sprint freestyle races – 50 meters (24.82) and 100 meters (55.71) – and Poelke took the 50 freestyle (22.34) and the 100 butterfly (53.29).


I-Meck 4A meet: The Lake Norman girls and the Mooresville boys dominated a meet Wednesday at West Charlotte High, with North Mecklenburg also competing.

Lake Norman’s girls took 10 of 11 events, including victories by freshman Hanani Dona in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. She also swam the lead lap on the victorious 200 medley relay team.

The only non-Lake Norman girls winner was Mooresville’s Lauren Evans, in the 500 freestyle.

In the boys’ competition, Mooresville won eight events, with Lake Norman taking two and North Mecklenburg one. Mooresville’s Calvin Warner won the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints, and Gabriel Warner took the 100 butterfly.

SoMeck 7 4A meet: Host Providence dominated the boys’ and girls’ competition, against Berry Academy, Harding, Olympic and West Mecklenburg.

The Providence girls won all 11 events, with Laura Davis (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle) and Cliare Lyons (50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke) taking two races each.

The Providence boys won 10 of 11 events, with double victories from Nathan Ford (100 backstroke and 200 individual medley) and Devin Blake (100 butterfly and 200 freestyle).

Olympic’s winner was Jalen Walker, in the 100 breaststroke.

North Lincoln sweeps: North Lincoln beat host East Burke 56-43 in the girls’ competition and 54-39 in the boys’ events.

East Burke’s Morgan Hall won the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle, and North Lincoln’s Regan Lang captured the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.



Boiling Springs Crest 51, Lawndale Burns 30: Crest’s Brad Moore (170) and Matthew Ledbetter (160) scored quick pins, with Moore winning in 1:02 and Ledbetter in 28 seconds. Burns’ Justin Davis (113) won with a first-period pin.

Boiling Springs Crest 44, East Davidson 36: Crest built a 38-18 lead and hung on for the victory. Winning by pin for the Chargers were Sean Matheson (138),Charlie Lowery (145), Matthew Ledbetter (160) and Clay Webber (285).

East Davidson 42, Lawndale Burns 30: Justin Davis (113), Jack Curtis (138), Silas Tate (185), James Gowan (220) and Jashaun Smarr (285) won by pins for Burns.

West Henderson 60, Lawndale Burns 21: James Gowan (220) and Jashaun Smarr (285) scored pin victories for the losing Bulldogs.

West Henderson 45, Boiling Springs Crest 33: Crest did well in the middle weights, with victories from Elisha Wellman (126), Rex Howard (132), Sean Matheson (138) and Charlie Lowery (145).


Concord Jay M. Robinson 48, Gastonia Forestview 33: The Bulldogs clinched victory with wins by Josh Miller (170), Parris Carter (182) and Joshua Martinez (220). In the closest match, Forestview’s Jesse Osborne edged Griffin Decker 9-6 at 152 pounds.

Monroe Union Academy 36, Marshville Forest Hills 21: The evening’s closest match saw Forest Hills’ Alan Helguera edging Ryan Miller 8-4 at 145 pounds. Union Academy pin winners were Josh Pyrock (160) and Ed Marlow (170). Forest Hills’ pin winners were Chris Barrett (195) and Edgar Barrera (220).

Olympic 72, West Mecklenburg 12: Nine Olympic wrestlers won by pin – Braeden Delao 9113), Jonavan Harris (120), Dequirian Merchant (132), Colby Schafers (145), Josiah Harris (152), Maxwell Brown (160), Mura Nabiev (170), Josiah Sanders (182) and Brandon Tang (220). West Mecklenburg pin victors were Eric Hudson (195)and Kevin Kasa (285).

Salisbury 42, Gastonia Forestview 34: Jesse Osborne (152), Kameron Miller (160), Daniel Cantilleps (170) and Brian Moore (195) won by pin for Forestview. The Hornets got pins from Michael Lowry (138), Reed Fugle (182), Wayne Wooden (220) and Kevion Chum (285).
