Area swimming/wrestling roundup: Christ the King, Hopewell top area swim meet

Christ the King’s girls and the Hopewell boys led the way Thursday in a three-team high school swim meet at West Charlotte High’s pool.

Also competing in the meet was Mallard Creek.

In the girls’ competition, Christ the King won six events, with four second-place finishes and six third-place swimmers. Mallard Creek had five first-place finishes, five runner-up finishes, and three swimmers in third.

Hopewell had two second-place and two third-place finishes.

In the boys’ events, Hopewell dominated, with seven victories, four second’s, and a third-place finish. Christ the King won three events, was second in one, and had five third-place finishes. Mallard Creek had one victory but six second-place finishes and five swimmers third.

Jordan Lamoreux and Amanda Hoffman each won two events for Christ the King, with Lamoreux taking the 200-meter freestyle and 100 butterfly. Hoffman won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Other individual winners were Mallard Creek’s Elan Booker (50 freestyle), Ana Mena (100 freestyle), Rachel Szeghy (500 freestyle) and Sara Beth Hollis (100 breaststroke).

Christ the King swept the three relay races.

Among the boys, double-winners were Hopewell’s Markus Wennborg (50 and 500 freestyles) and Chase Allison (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke). Other individual winners were Mallard Creek’s Jake Deng (200 freestyle) and Christ the King’s Ben Duckworth (200 individual medley) and Charlie Merryman (100 freestyle).

Union County Championships

The Weddington girls and Marvin Ridge boys won championships in the meet, held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center pool and featuring swimmers from 10 Union County schools.

Weddington’s girls edged Marvin Ridge 597-583, followed by Waxhaw Cuthbertson (530), Indian Trail Sun Valley (366), Monroe Union Academy (313), Monroe Parkwood (282), Unionville Piedmont (252), Indian Trail Porter Ridge (142), Monroe Central Academy (120), and Marshville Forest Hills (28).

Marvin Ridge totaled 631 points in the boys’ events, followed by Weddington (576), Cuthbertson (421), Piedmont (320), Central Academy (307), Sun Valley (289), Union Academy (260), Porter Ridge (128), Forest Hills (96) and Parkwood (79).

Girls’ event winners:

200 medley relay: Marvin Ridge; 200 freestyle: Ellie Van Note (Marvin Ridge); 200 individual medley: Maddy Flickinger (Weddington); 50 freestyle: Katie Corbi (Weddington); Diving: Abby Bernard (Weddington); 100 butterfly: Van Note (Marvin Ridge).

100 freestyle: Madeline Tessin (Marvin Ridge); 500 freestyle: Caroline Duhamel (Marvin Ridge); 200 freestyle relay: Marvin Ridge; 100 backstroke: Maddy Flickinger (Weddington); 100 breaststroke: Kaylee Hamblin (Parkwood); 400 freestyle relay: Weddington.

Boys’ event winners:

Avery County 50, Marion McDowell 20: Joe Jordan (113), Ethan Shell (120), Jonah Hayes (132), Lucas Andrews (170), Levi Andrews (220) and Zachary Vance (285) won by pin for Avery County.

Chesterfield (SC) 48, Monroe 30: Monroe won all five contested matches by pin, but Chesterfield piled up points by taking seven of the other nine weight classes by forfeit. Monroe winners were Jose Reyes (132), Bryzekeil Redfern (170), Jossue Lopez (182), Javon Robinson (220) and Amir Joseph (285).

Gastonia Forestview 54, Bessemer City 12: Anthony Cornelius (132), Trent Smith (138), Kameron Miller (170), Michael Grant (182) and Sam Kaylor (285) won by pin for the Jaguars.

Hough 49, Lake Norman 27: The Huskies won this I-Meck 4A match behind pins by Richard Treanor (106 pounds), Luke Kucko (152), Anthony Fabian (170), Colin Paradis (182) and Nicholas Salazar (285). Lake Norman pin winners were Slater McCray (138), Weston Weddington (145), Ian Debiero (160) and Nathan Dugan (195).

Midway Oak Grove 60, South Rowan 24: Jacob Cox (113), William Noblitt (126), Logan Perry (152) and Andrew Watkins (195) were the bout winners for South Rowan in this Central Carolina 2A match.

Weddington 34, Indian Trail Metrolina Christian 31: Denton DiCarlo clinched victory for the Warriors with a 13-3 decision over Metrolina’s Jacob Hattaway at 170 pounds. Metrolina winners by pin were Christian Palmer (113), Niles Debnam (138), Bryce McPherson (160) and Indiana Moen (195). Weddington got pin victories from Gerry Hartman (120), Alec Orrell (132), Aidan Nolan (145) and Cian Nolan (152).


South Mecklenburg 40, Charlotte Catholic 36: The Sabres won eight bouts, five by pin or forfeit and the other three by decisions. One highlight bout was at 106 pounds, where Chris Hawkins edged Catholic’s McLean Gaston 12-11. Anthony Hopkins (113), Finley LaFrancis (182) and Tucker Connette (220) scored first-period pins for South Mecklenburg.

Catholic’s William Cathy (152) and Tucker Brown (170) also won by pins in the first period.

South Mecklenburg 40, Concord Jay M. Robinson 34: Chris Hawkins (106), Anthony Hopkins (113), Ted Wright (145) and Finley LaFrancis (182) won by pin for the Sabres. Jay M. Robinson got pins from Connor Goodman (132), Griffin Decker (152), Josh Miller (160) and Garbiel Sevilla (170).


Kings Mountain 48, Lincolnton 19: Aiden Wilson (113), Darrell Whittaker (132), Jordan Lineberger (138), Bounmie Tuttanon (160), Nathan Groves (170) and Trey Crawford (182) won by pin for the Mountaineers. The Wolves’ Cameron Smith (120) and Daizay Powell (126) also won by pin.

Kings Mountain 48, Morganton Patton 27: Koby Rikard (106), Aiden Wilson (113), Darrell Whittaker (126), Dayvion Downs (138), Jordan Lineberger (145), Peyton Fisher (152) and Joe Ruffalo (195) scored pin victories for Kings Mountain. Winning by pin for Patton were Christian Hoffpauir (132), Kaleb Spann (170), Troy Gragg (182) and Austin Morales (220).

Kings Mountain 60, Belmont South Point 23: The Mountaineers piled up a 30-6 lead after the first six weight classes and coasted to a sweep of their three opponents for the night. Darrell Whittaker and Jordan Lineberger scored their third pin victories of the evening.

Lincolnton 51, Morganton Patton 28: Evonte Shuford (113), Daizay Powell (126), Justin White (132) and Esteban Hoyle (145) each won by pin for Lincolnton in less than a minute. Patton’s Kaleb Spann (170) scored a first-period pin.

Lincolnton 51, Belmont South Point 23: The Wolves’ winners by pin were Cameron Smith (120), Daizay Powell (126), Justin White (132), Esteban Hoyle (145) and Mason Whitaker (160). South Point’s Hunter Hogue (182) and Ethan Barnett (285) won by pin. In the closest bout, Lincolnton 138-pounder Matthew Byrd edged Conner Cobb 5-4.

Morganton Patton 59, Belmont South Point 18: Patton salvaged a victory from the evening, with Kegan Burris (145), Kaleb Spann (170) and Austin Morales (220) winning by pins in the first period. The Red Raiders got first-period pins from Corbin Allen (152) and Andrew Warren (182).


Claremont Bunker Hill 42, North Lincoln 41: North Lincoln led 41-6, but Bunker Hill rallied with victories in the last six bouts. The clincher came at 285 pounds, where Casey Bolick pinned North Lincoln’s Aaron Wyatt Painter.

Hickory St. Stephens 61, North Lincoln 6: The hosts won behind pins by Braxton Hankinson (106), De’Untae Henry (152), Ivan Vergel (160), Jordan Bolling (170), Dakota Metcalf (182) and Salvador Gilvaja (195). Jordan Schlossman (113) and Aaron Painter (285) won decisions for North Lincoln.

Hickory St. Stephens 66, Claremont Bunker Hill 12: Bunker Hill’s Garret Ikerd (182) and Casey Bolick (220) won by pin, but St. Stephens took the other matches. The closest bout was at 285 pounds, where St. Stephens’ Ryan Campbell edged Aaron Bryant 7-5.

St. Stephens’ pin winners were Jovanny Urzua (120), Graham Ormand (126), Tariq Shuford (132), Blake Baker (138), Garrett Bolling (145), Ivan Vergel (160) and Jordan Bolling (170).


Central Cabarrus 54, Monroe Union Academy 30: Forfeits in the last three weight classes enabled the Vikings to win this match. Jordan Nance (132) and Spencer Thompson (145) won by pin for Central Cabarrus. Union Academy’s pin winners were Isaac Williams (138), Christopher Morgan (160) and Eli Marlow (170).

Waxhaw Cuthbertson 54, Central Cabarrus 24: The closest bout was at 126 pounds, where Noah Zandy of Cuthbertson beat Jordan Nance 5-2. Leander Chance (138) of Cuthbertson won by pin in 38 seconds, and Kurt Petroff (160) scored a 41-second fall.

Waxhaw Cuthbertson 66, Monroe Union Academy 12: Most of the matches were forfeits, but Cuthbertson’s Noah Zandy (126), Leander Chance (138), Jack McDermid (145), Tyler Carroll (152) and Kurt Petroff (158) and Union Academy’s Eli Marlow (170) won by pin.


West Stanly 66, West Montgomery 6: The Colts won most bouts by forfeit, but Brandon Becker (170), Samuel Veazey (195) and Jessie Furr (285) scored pins.

West Stanly 60, East Montgomery 15: Grant Honeycuff opened the match at 106 pounds with a first-period pin, and the Colts were off and running. Korbin McNeill (132), Andrew Becker (160) and Jessie Furr (285) also scored pins for West Stanly.
