Four Toledo pitchers combined to no-hit the Charlotte Knights Saturday in a 5-0 win in the teams’ three-game series opener. The no-hitter was Toledo’s first since Jose Lima accomplished the feat on August 17, 1994. Saturday’s loss snapped a three-game winning-streak for the Knights.
Toledo RHP Warwick Saupold (1-1, 1.50) started the game at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio, for the Mud Hens and did not allow a run over his five scoreless innings. Saupold started in place of scheduled starter Matt Boyd, who was scratched before game time. He struck-out three batters on the day.
Preston Guilmet was solid in the sixth and seventh inning for the ‘Hens, while Logan Kensing (eighth inning), and Bobby Parnell (ninth inning) continued the solid pitching efforts. All four Toledo pitchers combined to allow just one walk.
The Mud Hens scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning off Charlotte starter Chris Volstad (1-1, 2.38), who was saddled with his first loss of the season. Volstad gave up four of his five runs in the third inning.

Toledo second baseman Cory Jones ripped a one-out triple in the bottom of the third frame to ignite the offense. Wynton Bernard then reached base on a fielding error by Charlotte second baseman Carlos Sanchez, which pushed the first run of the game across, 1-0. After a Cameron Maybin walk, Dixon Machado doubled home two runs to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Chad Huffman then added an RBI double to make it a 4-0 Toledo lead.
The Mud Hens scored one more time in the game and did so in the bottom of the fourth inning when former Knights catcher Miguel Gonzalez singled home Jordany Valdespin for the club’s fifth run of the game, 5-0.
In all, Volstad allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks over five innings of work. Charlotte relievers Michael Ynoa and Brad Goldberg combined to hold the ‘Hens scoreless over the final three innings. Goldberg was promoted to Charlotte earlier in the day from Double-A Birmingham and made his Triple-A debut in the eighth inning of Saturday’s game.
