Charlotte Knights erase 4-run deficit, lose in 9th to Columbus

Giovanny Urshela’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night scored Ronny Rodriguez from third base to give the Columbus Clippers to a 7-6 victory over the Charlotte Knights in the second game of their Class AAA International League baseball series. The win was the seventh straight for the Clippers.

The Knights battled back from a 6-2 deficit in the eighth inning. Vinny Rottino started things off by drawing a one-out walk. Reliever Jeff Johnson also walked Danny Hayes and Jacob May to set the stage for Daniel Fields, who smashed a grand slam to tie the score.

Jesus Aguilar doubled off Charlotte reliever Michael Ynoa (0-2, 6.75 ERA) to begin the bottom of the ninth for Columbus. Rodriguez came on to pinch run and scored the winning run.

Clippers reliever Jordan Cooper (1-0, 5.40 ERA) earned the win by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Carlos Sanchez finished the game 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and now leads the Knights with six stolen bases.

The Knights will conclude their three-game series against the Clippers at 11:35 a.m. Thursday.
