Knights drop opener to Gwinnett, 4-0

Gwinnett starter Williams Perez tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout to lead the Braves to a 4-0 win over the Charlotte Knights on Friday in the opening game of their three-game series in Lawrenceville, GA.

A two-out single to Leury Garcia in the fifth inning was the only hit allowed by Perez (1-2, 3.26. Perez struck out seven batters on the evening and walked just one.

Charlotte starter Terance Marin (1-3, 7.61) allowed three runs over five innings and was saddled with the loss.

Blake Lalli, who played at Gardner-Webb, singled home the game’s first run. Ozzie Albies followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Braves scored their third run of the inning on a double steal which saw Ronnie Mustelier swipe home to make it 3-0.

The Knights will continue the three-game series against the Gwinnett Braves at 7:05 p.m. Saturday with RHP Chris Beck (1-2, 6.49) getting the start.

▪ Righthander Scott Carroll was recalled to the Chicago White Sox, becoming the eighth player this season to go from Charlotte to Chicago.

Catcher Alex Avila, who is currently on Chicago’s disabled list, was to begin a rehab assignment with the Charlotte Knights starting Friday.

Outfielder Jason Coats, who is currently leading the International League in batting average with a .364 mark, was activated from the Charlotte Knights disabled list, along with infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia.

Infielder Marcus Lemon was assigned to Birmingham, while RHP Erik Johnson re-joined the Knights after being optioned back from Chicago.
