Chris Volstad allowed just two runs over seven innings Thursday to help the Charlotte Knights to a 3-2 Class AAA International League baseball victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Volstad, a right-hander, was backed by an offense that scored all of its runs in the third inning against RailRiders starter Brady Lail (2-2).

In the third, Carlos Sanchez and Jason Bourgeois hit back-to-back, one-out singles to get the Knights started. Danny Hayes then stepped to the plate and lined a two-run double to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Nicky Delmonico’s sacrifice fly brought home Hayes.

Volstad (5-4) allowed his only two runs of the game in the third inning on a two-run double by Donovan Solano, which brought Scranton/Wilkes-Barre within 3-2.

Michael Ynoa and Tommy Kahnle each pitched an inning after Volstad left, with Kahnle getting a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

Sanchez and Matt Davidson led Charlotte’s offense with two hits apiece, and Hayes finished the game with one hit and two RBIs.

The Knights will have an off day Friday before opening a three-game series Saturday at Buffalo with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader.
