Anthony Ranaudo held Durham to one run in five innings Wednesday, but Luke Maile, Jake Goebbert and Dayron Varona jumped on Charlotte Knights relievers for home runs to rally the Bulls to a 6-4 Class AAA International League baseball victory at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The late power showing by Durham overshadowed one by the Knights’ Jerry Sands, who smacked two-run homers during the first and eighth innings to keep Charlotte in the game.
Sands’ first home run came against Durham starter Jamie Schultz. In the eighth inning, he launched a two-run blast against reliever Mark Sappington.
Charlotte’s 2-0 lead lasted until the fifth inning because starter Anthony Ranaudo was sharp. Ranaudo, who had not allowed a run in 16 consecutive innings coming in, had his streak end in the fifth when Johnny Field scored on a sacrifice fly by Goebbert.

Ranaudo, however, was replaced to start the sixth by Blake Smith (3-1). Smith allowed two runs in the inning on a home run to Luke Maile. At that point, the Bulls led 3-2.
An inning later, Durham tacked on three more runs against reliever Will Lamb. That inning was highlighted by two home runs, a solo shot by Goebbert and a two-run shot by Dayron Varona.
Dana Eveland (1-0) earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The win was Durham’s third in as many days against the Knights. The teams will wrap up their four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. Thursday game in Durham.
