Jacob Turner pitched a complete game Friday night, scattering six hits to lead the Charlotte Knights to a 5-0 victory over the Gwinnett Braves.
Turner didn’t walk a batter and struck out five as he improved to 4-6 and helped the Knights (36-40) snap a six-game losing streak. It was the first nine-inning complete game for a Knights pitcher since Brad Penny on July 3, 2015. Joel De La Cruz (1-3) took the loss for the Braves (33-42).
A three-run first inning gave Charlotte all the offense it would need. Matt Davidson’s RBI single and Leury Garcia’s run-scoring double accounted for two runs, and the third scored on a throwing error by Braves second baseman Ozzie Aibies.
Carlos Sanchez and Brett Hayes hit solo home runs for the Knights.
Game 2 of the three-game series is set for Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
▪ Garcia was activated off the Temporary Inactive List before the game, and infielder Ryan Leonards was assigned to Class A Winston-Salem.
