Charlotte Knights split doubleheader with Durham Bulls

Matt Davidson’s grand slam capped a five-run fifth inning Tuesday night and lifted the Charlotte Knights to a 5-4 victory over Durham in the first game of a doubleheader at BB&T BallPark.

The Bulls won the second game 7-2 on the strength of two home runs by Dayron Varona. Charlotte had only three hits in the nightcap.

Trailing 3-0 in the first game, Charlotte opened the bottom of the fifth with a home run by Omar Narvaez. One out later, singles by Jake Peter, Jacob May and Carlos Sanchez loaded the bases. Jason Bourgeois struck out before Davidson hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in right-center field.

Anthony Ranaudo (4-2) yielded two home runs and 12 of the Bulls’ 14 hits but earned the victory. Tommy Kahnle struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh for his sixth save.

The teams play the series finale Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
