See NASCAR drivers race (karts) ... for free

NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers like Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and Joey Logano will face each other Tuesday evening in Mooresville, and fans can see it for free.

The GoPro Motorplex is the site of the 600 Festival stop, dubbed the “Little 600,” which features more than a dozen NASCAR drivers competing in motorized karts. There’s a $10 parking fee, but no admission charge.

Tuesday’s kart races are part of the 600 Festival, which continues later this week with Coca-Cola Speed Street in Charlotte’s uptown.

In addition to the races, there will be autograph sessions, prize raffles, food trucks, and a kids’ zone. Gates open at 4 p.m., and racing is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. The kart race track is at 801 Mazeppa Road in Mooresville.

At the track: It’s another quiet day at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with activity resuming Thursday.

Library program: Former longtime Charlotte Observer motorsports writer Tom Higgins will speak Tuesday night at the Myers Park branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Higgins will discuss what it was like to cover NASCAR in the sport’s early days. His program is at 6:30 p.m. The library is at 1361 Queens Road.
