Charlotte getting a viral video sensation in Jeremy Lin

dtfoster@charlotteobserver.com

As Jeremy Lin signs a contract with the Hornets, Charlotte is getting more than a 6-foot-3 backup point guard. The city is getting a viral video star.

Even before a series of breakout games with the New York Knicks in early 2012 thrust him into the national spotlight, the Harvard graduate was known for producing videos on his YouTube channel. Since then, they’ve only grown more popular.

His journey from undrafted free agent to one of the NBA’s first Asian-American stars has also made Lin the subject of a popular documentary and a SportsCenter spot.

Here’s a guide to the essential Jeremy Lin.

1) Before the fame. Remember Lin with the Golden State Warriors? Nobody does. But Lin spent his time pumping out funny videos. This one is among the most popular. Search engine traffic couldn’t have hurt.

2) Linsanity. A documentary crew just happened to be following Lin around when he hit it big. This was the result.

3) “You’ve changed, bro.”

4) This is SportsCenter. You know you’ve made it when you’re a part of a SportsCenter commercial.

5) Still a regular guy. A lot of his new videos are highly produced, but this one made waves.
