Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte Hornets - Memphis Grizzlies: Observations

•  At halftime the Hornets re-hung the retired jersey of the late Bobby Phills, who died in a car accident in 2000 while playing for the original Hornets. Those Hornets took Phills’ banner to New Orleans when they moved. As part of the rebranding from Bobcats to Hornets, Phills’ jersey came back to Charlotte.

•  Phills’ widow, Kendall, said she was ecstatic to see her husband’s jersey “back where it belongs.” Kendall said the situation became awkward after the Hornets changed names to Pelicans and moved Bobby’s jersey from the arena to the practice gym.

•  The Hornets committed 13 turnovers in the first half. That’s what they should average for a game.

•  After shooting 29 percent and totaling 30 points, the Hornets were fortunate to be in the game at the half. The saving grace was the Grizzlies were nearly as discombobulated offensively, shooting 36 percent and committing 11 turnovers.
