Carolina has named its 2017 team captains, with a new (veteran) face among the group.

Quarterback Cam Newton, tight end Greg Olsen, linebackers Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly, center Ryan Kalil and safety Kurt Coleman will be the Panthers’ team captains this season.

It is the first time Coleman has gotten the honor for the Panthers.

“I think the biggest thing more so than anything else is all you have to do is watch when something happens. Kurt is one of the first ones to go over there and put his arm around somebody and try and explain something and help them out,” said head coach Ron Rivera on Friday morning. “When something positive happens, he’s also one of the first ones over there. It’s not like he’s looking for something negative. He’s always looking for something positive to help build on it. That’s probably one of the more impressive things about Kurt.”

Last year, Coleman’s spot was occupied by defensive end Charles Johnson.
