Without any backups to take some of the training camp kicks, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he would be mindful not to tax the legs of kicker Graham Gano and punter Brad Nortman.
The team was carrying a third specialist, Matt Wile, but cut the undrafted free agent from Michigan last week to make room for defensive tackle Kenny Horsley after Star Lotulelei’s foot injury.
The Panthers had kicker/punter Jordan Gay at Wofford last summer until the first round of cuts. Gay later found work as Buffalo’s kickoff specialist.
Rivera said cutting Wile was a tough decision.
“We had to think about it long and hard because Matt really flashed,” Rivera said. “He showed he can both kick and punt. He had a couple really good days.”
