As reported all week, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will start Sunday after missing the season opener at Tampa Bay.
Rivera said there’s “no doubt” in his mind Newton will be ready to go against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.
“The way he’s practiced, the way he’s done things, he’s gotten progressively better,” Rivera said. “His rhythm is back, his timing with his receivers seems to be pretty sound right now. His decision-making was good today.”
Newton is listed as probable along with tight end Greg Olsen, who practiced Friday after missing Thursday’s practice to be with his family.
Olsen’s son, T.J., is recovering from a third open-heart surgery. Rivera said things have gone well for T.J. so far.
Guard/tackle Garry Williams is questionable with a hip injury. The Panthers sent Williams for an MRI and were awaiting the results as of Friday afternoon.
Linebacker and special teams ace Jason Williams (thigh) fully participated in practice and he’s questionable for the game.
