Panthers wide receiver Philly Brown took off his pads halfway through practice and had ice on his surgically repaired right shoulder. Coach Ron Rivera said the team was being cautious after Brown took a hit on the shoulder.

▪ Defensive end Kony Ealy left team drills at one point and was seen stretching his right leg. But Ealy returned several minutes later and finished practice.

▪ Second-year offensive tackle Daryl Williams has been solid when he plays on the right side. But the former Oklahoma player continues to struggle at left tackle. He was beaten by defensive ends Mario Addison and Wes Horton in succession during the 1-on-1 pass-rush drill.

▪ Speedy wideout Damiere Byrd used a nice double move against rookie cornerback Zack Sanchez to get open deep along the sideline early in practice.

▪ The secondary seemed to ease up a bit after receiver Devin Funchess and cornerback Daryl Worley fought, with defensive backs playing coverage but not contesting passes. At least until third-year cornerbackBené Benwikere made a nice break to dive in front of rookie receiver Keyarris Garrett and intercept Cam Newton.
