The Charlotte Independence scored three second-half goals Saturday afternoon and went on to defeat the Harrisburg City Islanders 3-1.
The win completes a season sweep of the Islanders. The Independence also beat Harrisburg 2-1 at Ramblewood Stadium on April 2. Saturday’s United Soccer League game originally was scheduled for Friday night but was postponed because of heavy rain and lightning.
Harrisburg took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Independence (7-4-3) broke through when Islanders defender Shawn McLaws was called for a handball in the box in the 52nd minute. That set up a penalty kick by Charlotte’s Enzo Martinez, who nailed it to tie the game.
The go-ahead goal came eight minutes later when City Islanders goalkeeper Nick Noble made a save on a Bilal Duckett header, only to see David Estrada convert the rebound. Charlotte’s third goal came after Harrisburg defender James Thomas was given a red card in the 77th minute. Playing with only 10 men, the City Islanders gave up a goal when Lewis Hilton scored off a pass from Brian Brown. It was Hilton’s first goal as a professional.
