The asterisk means this is a Ryan Lochte-free zone. So these are the five stories I wrote about the Olympics that received the most page views on CharlotteObserver.com but were not about Ryan Lochte. And notice how every story involves someone with a strong North Carolina connection. None of my stories on Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt or Simone Biles made this list.

1. Tears of gold: N.C. State swimmer Ryan Held helps U.S. win 4x100 Olympic relay.

2. Depression. Drugs. Alcohol. Tourette’s. And, at 35, another Olympics (a feature story on swimmer Anthony Ervin).

3. Locklear in limbo no more: N.C. gymnast won’t compete in Olympics.

4. Katie Meili: The Olympic swimmer who came out of nowhere.

5. Nic Batum better not play like that when he gets back to Charlotte.
