Why the next great boxing match can’t possibly include MMA fighter Conor McGregor

Boxing’s next super fight will not match undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor. McGregor has no chance to beat Mayweather, not in boxing. But it’s the rare fight that will engage boxing fans and fans of mixed martial arts.

The next super fight will match two boxers – Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. Golovkin, who is 9 years older than Alvarez, is superb. He’s 37-0 with 33 knockouts and has successfully defended his middleweight title 18 times. Man, does he come after you.

Alvarez pounded Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Saturday, winning every round on the card of every judge. Alvarez is 49-1-1 with 34 knockouts.

Let’s offer Kudos to Alvarez, whose only loss is to Mayweather, for agreeing to fight GGG.

The bout is scheduled for Sept. 16, Mexican Independence Day (Alvarez is Mexican) at a site yet to be determined.
