SouthPark mall is getting a makeover (pics!), and Uber/Lyft coming to the airport?

Back in May we wrote about all of the new developments in the booming SouthPark area.

Now the mall that makes up the heart of the region is getting a makeover, inside and out. It’s got to look nice for all the new neighbors, of course.

Details and renderings of the coming renovation:

On the inside.

– Refinished columns

– Luxury seating areas with enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity and chargers

– New flooring and furniture in the food court

– New signage and accents, like plants and floor coverings.

On the outside.

– New painting and framing to the canopy at the mall’s main entrance

– New seating at the main entrance and fountain

– New two-sided gas fireplace added to West Plaza, the outdoor space between Dick’s Sporting Goods and California Pizza Kitchen.

– Landscaping, new LED lighting and fountain improvements.

The mall will be open throughout the construction, which should be completed before the winter holiday shopping season (thank goodness).

Uber/Lyft to and from the airport?

Charlotte Douglas Airport could create a designated place for “transportation network companies” to pick up passengers, according to Interim Aviation Director Brent Cagle. That’s fancy talk for services like Uber and Lyft.

It could work like it does in Nashville — one of the first large U.S. airports to embrace the ride-sharing services — where Uber and Lyft get permits and pay fees to the airport.

This seems like good news for travelers, but the cab companies probably won’t like it. Especially since the airport will continue to limit the number of traditional taxi companies allowed to pick up passengers at the airport to three.
