Discovery Place to offer $1 admission to city’s neediest

The Story

New program unveiled today will admit families on public assistance to Discovery Place, the Nature Museum and any of its satellite museums for $1/person.

The Facts

– Normally admission ranges from $10-$15/person, making Discovery Place prohibitive for many low-income families.

– Those who have an EBT (electronic benefit transfer) or WIC (Women, Infants and Children) card will only be charged $1/person.

– Mecklenburg has about 80,000 residents on public assistance.

Quote

“On the rare occasions we’ve had the funds to make a field trip to Discovery Place or Charlotte Nature Museum, our children asked to live there.” — Claire Tate, the board chair for Charlotte Bilingual Preschool

C5’s Take

While the occasional school field trip is great, Discovery Place is best experienced when families can spend quality time there. We’re thrilled that more children will now have the opportunity to get excited about science. Great move.
