The Charlotte skyline is about to change - 6 reasons why
The Story
Ground broke today on the first office tower to be built in uptown since the end of the recession.
The Facts
The last big buildings to get built were the Duke Energy Center and 1 Bank of America Center, opened in 2010. Today’s groundbreaking marks what should be a flurry of red dirt over the next several years. (Check out this great Charlotte Observer interactive piece on what’s going where.)
(1) Today the shovels will be at 300 S. Tryon, at Third Street, on that surface lot next to Latta Arcade and across the street from Bearden Park. 25 stories. Babson Capital Management will be anchor tenant. Finished by spring 2017.
(2) Crescent Communities plans a tower at Tryon and Stonewall, where the old Goodyear was. 27 stories. 450-room hotel, retail, grocery store, apartments.
(3) The Westin hotel plans an office tower on top of its parking deck at South College and Stonewall streets. 19 stories.
(4) SkyHouse Uptown apartments are rising 24 stories above North Tryon, just past Discovery Place. A second set will start construction soon.
(5) Over by NASCAR Plaza, look for a 10-story Embassy Suites hotel.
(6) The 9.4-acre property that the Charlotte Observer sits on is for sale.

C5’s Take
It’s amazing that surface lot beside Latta Arcade has sat empty for so long. Keep an eye now on the parking lot beside the Gantt museum – also prime pickings.
