One man’s trash is … Charlotte’s financial windfall!

THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER

The Story

Charlotte may switch to a pay-as-you-throw garbage collection method in hopes of encouraging more recycling and less waste.

The Facts

– Talk about the dirty details. Ideas to monitor this throw-as-you-go method include special garbage bags scanned by cameras mounted on trash trucks (whoa!), allowing residents to switch to a smaller trash bin and pay less, and getting a bill based on how much your trash weighs.

– Right now, this is all in the idea stage. The city will decide whether it even wants to do this in May and then take until fall to figure out the how.
