Inclusive hair shop opens up in Midtown
No matter how you identify, it is always important to feel welcomed and safe, especially when seeking personal services. The team at Bishops Cuts/Colors just arrived in Midtown to help alleviate those concerns for people in Charlotte.
“My wife and I had our own negative experiences when it came to hair salons,” said Greg Bullard, owner of Bishops Cuts/Colors Charlotte. “We took the things that we felt were missing from our salon experiences and implemented them into our model at Bishops.”
Nationally, the Bishops chain has partnered and registered with LGBTQIA alliances to ensure that all customers who walk through the door are comfortable. Those alliances include Strands for Trans and TG Chic.
“We have two sayings here at Bishops that aim to make everyone feel safe, no matter how they identify. ‘Different is good. We celebrate different. Let’s be different together.’ The other is: ‘At Bishops, we want to help you be who you want to be, judgment free’.”
Bullard said there have been instances where customers have driven hours to get to a Bishops location just to feel that sense of inclusion that the shop provides.
As a customer, Bullard’s wife Debbie often found herself needing a style last minute, so the salon offers both prior-scheduled and walk-in services. All services are a la cart.
“The vibe is very laid back and meant to appeal to everyone. From couples coming in together or individuals, our aim is to simply make people look good. No matter your age or gender, we do everyone’s hair,” Bullard said.
When you walk into the shop, you will be met with upbeat music and local art filling the walls, including a 20-foot mural by local artist Osiris Rain. Take your choice of complimentary beer or water while you wait.
The stylists aren’t restricted to a dress code, either. “We want their personal style to come through. Our stylists truly love working here because of this.”
In addition to inclusivity, the team at Bishops is all about the community. Its goal is to partner with nonprofits in the area in some way. “Giving back is big to us,” Bullard, who is a native Charlottean, said.
You can find Bishops at 209 S. Kings Drive with plenty of parking available. It is open 7 days a week.
