Shiprocked! Be there. Tonight.

Every Thursday night, local DJ Scott Weaver hosts Plaza Midwood’s most popular nightlife staple, Shiprocked!, at Snug Harbor. Neither rain nor sleet nor Christmas day itself stops this party. It has been a facet of underground Charlotte culture for years.

Here are five reasons why Shiprocked! should be your Thursday night destination of choice:

1. The impeccable music selection

Weaver’s taste in upbeat dance, funk and rock music is primarily what sets this party apart from the other dance clubs in Charlotte. He seems to effortlessly pull selections from a variety of styles of upbeat and underground music. Recently, there has been a semi-regular “Classic funk, soul & disco” edition, which is an homage to “Soul Train.”

 2. Themed nights and onstage fun

Whether it’s burlesque, a punk band, go go dancers or a drag revue, there’s almost always a pretty wild theme for each night. You are only asked to participate by showing up — and having a good time.

 3. Shiprocked promotes safe sex

Every Thursday night, you’ll find boxes of condoms freely and readily available inside the bar. Weaver estimates that, during his time as show runner of Shiprocked! over the last eight years, he has given away some 24,000 condoms. Be safe!

4. It’s LGBT friendly

Outside of participating in Charlotte Pride every year, Shiprocked! is revered for being a zone free of judgment, regardless of race, gender identity or sexual orientation.

5. It’s a weekly neighborhood hangout

Friends come to Snug Harbor every Thursday night and you’ll frequently see many of the same faces week after week — the party may be on a weeknight, but for many artists and service industry workers who come out at 10 or 11 at night, it’s the best place to socialize after a long shift.
