Yes to free WiFi, no to selfie sticks at the Wells Fargo Championship

Relax. Breathe. Unlock your phone.

This week, there is no need for you to dig into your cellular data plan while you dutifully check your work emails during the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. (Really, we know you’re scrolling through Instagram.)

Time Warner Cable has heroically offered free WiFi at various spots along the course.

Before you get too excited, take note that only your hand should be holding that Internet-enabled phone.

PGA TOUR events now strictly prohibit the use of selfie sticks.

Golf isn’t the only sport that is banning these devices: they were forbidden at the Churchill Downs track that housed the 2015 Kentucky Derby as well, reportedly to maintain the safety of the horses and spectators alike.

But why make this rule when photography is already banned Thursday through Sunday?

In response to in-depth questioning, Lee Patterson, director of communications for the Wells Fargo Championship, revealed: “That is a PGA TOUR security policy.”

So good luck trying to sneak in your selfie stick under your preppy polo shirt. If you’re going to comply with this new rule, you might as well follow the rest.

Among them:

– Do not smuggle alcoholic beverages. In or out. There are plenty on sale for you to enjoy.

– Do not bring bags or carry items that are larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. And don’t bring your yardstick to measure your bags or hand-held items because poles and rods of any type are also banned.

– Do not enter with whistles, horns or noise makers. It’s time to master your silent scream and golf clap.

– Do not carry illegal substances onto the course. That includes cocaine and heroin. And selfie sticks.
