Libraries are sexy: 4 reasons why
The words “library” and “sexy” rarely go together, unless you’re talking about a Halloween costume. But in my young-adult years, I’ve come to find to the library sexy in a whole new way, a way that skimpy button downs and a fake pair of glasses can’t compete with.
The library provides knowledge, hobbies and free downloads. After all, what’s sexier than being well-read and having interesting hobbies?
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library had 23,000 programs last year. That’s a whole lot of programs that you probably didn’t take advantage of. The time to start is now.
Some ideas:

-Opened Feb. 17, 2015 at the Main Library.
-It’s basically a 21st century reinvention of high school shop class. You’re given the tools, the environment, the training, and the space to build what you want to build.
-Includes a 3D printer, laser etcher, vinyl cutter and sewing machines.
-“Professional Book Cover Design” will be offered on July 23.
(2) Downloads
-Audio Books. Also known as my saving grace for daily walks. With a good book coming through your earbuds, it won’t take long for your wrist to buzz as you reach your Fitbit goal. It also saves you nearly $30 per audio book.
-eBooks. Always have a book downloaded on your phone. It makes waiting at long Charlotte stoplights bearable. I’m looking at you Fairview and Sharon. (Editor’s note: We don’t recommend reading books while driving. Stay safe, Charlotte.)
–Music. You can download up to three songs per week, which is kind of like creating your own radio station. Because apparently they, too, can only play three hits on repeat.
(3) Programs
–The Millennial Meetup Cooking Demo: Learn how to make Vietnamese Spring Roll (Gỏi cuốn) and Grilled Pork Patty Spring Roll (Nem Nướng Cuốn). May 14 at Beatties Ford Road.
–Film making: Join Will Davis, UNC Charlotte film instructor, for an interactive look at how films are developed, including script writing, rehearsing, producing, directing, editing, and marketing. May 14 at Mountain Island branch.
–Title Swap for Twenties and Thirties (TNT): Learn about great new books without having the commitment of a book club. Share something you are reading now, such as a favorite book or author, in an informal setting. May 28 at University City Regional.
(4) Check out books. Save beer money.
-Why buy a book when you can read the book for free and put the saved money toward some NoDa Brewing Hop, Drop ‘n Rolls?
If you are like me, once a “Brary Dog” (as my 1995 library card states), always a Brary Dog.
