What are you ... Dan Clodfelter? 3 questions for Charlotte’s mayor
In college I had a social economics professor who provided us with several easy-to-do, informal self-assessment exercises. He said that if you really want to know yourself better you have to take a look at what you do when you are alone.
One exercise was to ask yourself three questions:
(1) What are you reading?
(2) What are you listening to?
(3) What are you watching?
Then take the answers to these three questions and find the meaning, theme or message.
We decided to use this exercise to get a glimpse of the personal side of some Charlotte notables and celebrities.
Our first subject is none other than the fearless leader of the Queen City, Mayor Dan Clodfelter.
What are you reading?
“I am re-reading the historical trilogy ‘The Civil War: A Narrative‘ by Shelby Foote. I read it some time ago and, with this being the 150-year anniversary of the end of the Civil War, I felt it was a good time to re-read and learn something I might have missed the first time through.
“One thing that sticks out this time is that the generals on both sides are so young; All of them are under the age of 40.”
What are you listening to?
“NPR. I love everything on NPR. I especially like listening to NPR on Saturdays. The ‘Car Talk‘ re-runs are particularly entertaining. They are not stale at all. They are always relevant and you always learn something.”

What are you watching?
“I have been watching several cooking shows on cable TV. I am not a gourmet cook at all but I especially love watching the competition cooking shows. They are very interesting and the contestants are from many different backgrounds and experience.”
So what does all of this mean to our mayor?
“I guess it means that I like to learn about things. Whether it comes from a re-read, a re-run, or a new experience, learning things is what I desire.”
