5 Brunch spots to cure your hangover on New Year’s Day

If you’re able to drag yourself out of bed (or off the floor) on New Year’s Day, there are plenty of brunch options that await. Go for something spicy, greasy, or the hair-of-the-dog approach to get your New Year started right, sans hangover. Or at least with a full belly.

(1) The Rogue

1315 East Blvd.

Open for brunch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., this new establishment in Dilworth seeks to serve “good, honest pub food with an Irish flair.” Their regular brunch menu boasts a sweeter side, like coffee cake French toast with sourdough, whipped butter, maple syrup and bananas; and a salty side, like a build-your-own-omelet with bacon, cheddar, sausage, home fries and more. For a kick, add a $4 Bellini, a $4 mimosa or a $5 Bloody Mary.

(2) Draught

601 S. Cedar St.

As Draught suggests, New Year’s resolutions can start after Jan. 1. They’re serving up plenty of drink specials that would derail you anyway: $2 single mimosas, $4 double mimosas, $15 bottles of champagne and a $5 Bloody Mary bar. Brunch is served from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with items including a build-your-own-omelet (with pulled pork, goat cheese, tomatoes, spinach, bacon and more), eggs benedict, shrimp and grits, and a frittata.

But stay optimistic: If you bring in your gym membership you’ll get 10 percent off on New Year’s Day.

(3) 204 North Kitchen & Cocktails

204 N. Tryon St.

204 North will be open for brunch 11 a.m.-4 p.m.Their regular brunch menu has a broad range of healthy choices (think avocado toast featuring a fried egg and cilantro), decadent choices (like shrimp and grits with braised tomatoes and sweet peppers) and traditional choices (like triple-stacked blueberry pancakes with chocolate mint sauce).

For the hair-of-the-dog approach, $4 mimosas and $6 Bloody Marys will be available.

who’s ready to watch the @panthers get a W today?! Join us for brunch before or during the game from 10am to 4pm today!

(4) Free Range Brewing

2320 N. Davidson St. #D

Free Range is offering a twist on brunch with their third annual Free Soup Day from noon-4 p.m. Local chefs will be rolling out soup and Dukes Bread is providing the crusty stuff. So far, Marc Jacksina of Earl’s Grocery will be sharing cream of tomato soup, Clark Barlowe of Heirloom will be sharing broccoli cheese soup and Jamie Swofford of The Chef’s Farmer will be sharing a Posole. Don’t forget about the shrub, coffee and beer on tap in the tap room, and the band Sweet Sweet playing 4-6 p.m.

As for why the food is free? As Free Range says: “We want to give back to all of you great folks and help you get 2018 started off right.”

(5) Stewart Penick’s Terrace

14815 Ballantyne Village Way, Suite 150 (Ballantyne) and 4625 Piedmont Row Drive, Suite 105 (SouthPark – hours may vary)

You could also treat the day like any other and just wake up for breakfast (or treat it as weekday brunch, depending on the time you stumble in). Stewart Penick’s Terrace will be serving their regular breakfast menus from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Ballantyne. Dig into crab cake and florentine benedicts, breakfast sandwiches, steak and eggs, vegan breakfast with vegan chicken or chorizo, and more. A hot cup of coffee probably wouldn’t hurt, either.

Feast your eyes.
