Non-profits that rock: Care Ring

When 27-year-old Christina found out she was pregnant, she was at a complete loss.

She was on her own. Had no job. No insurance. Not even family to help her through it – her own mother had died at age 15.

Christina had no idea what kind of mother she could be.

Then she was connected to Care Ring, a local non-profit that provides health care to those who can’t afford it. Through Care Ring’s Nurse-Family Partnership, Christina was partnered with Dashe, a nurse who stayed with her through the pregnancy, delivery and beyond.

“Dashe is just amazing … just amazing,” Christina said. “Without that, I can’t image.”

Christina is now a student at UNCC studying special education.

Care Ring doesn’t get a lot of press around town, but it’s a non-profit that is providing critical care to Charlotte’s neediest. In addition to the Nurse-Family Partnership, Care Ring offers:

Low Cost Clinic: At Care Ring’s location uptown (the corner of Fifth & Davidson) anyone can be seen by their top-rated doctors for as low as $50.  Whether you need lab work, specialty shots or just need a physical, there are opportunities for you to take advantage of this program without breaking the bank.

Physicians Reach-Out:  Ranging from dental to medical, doctors all over Mecklenburg County volunteer their time to help the uninsured. Patients meet these doctors at their own practice. To date, more than $100 million in care has been donated. Whoa.

Gala

This Saturday is Care Ring’s annual Gala, at the Hilton Charlotte Center City.  Highlights:

– It’s a circus. I am not saying that to be funny, this gala is literally a circus.  It’s named “Under The Big Top Gala” and there will, in fact, be circus performers.

– Open bar and dinner. That’s right, you can eat, drink, and dance the night away with your ticket.  Um, you had me at open bar.

 – Live and silent auction. Prizes include ski weeks, condo in Argentia, summer BBQ party and tickets and field passes to a Panthers game.
