8 local experiences to give as Mother’s Day gifts

Mother’s Day is such a special time of the year to celebrate and honor your mom. Why not help her remember this May 13 holiday in a whole new way—by gifting her an experience that she’ll never forget? Here are a few local gift ideas so you can chuck material possessions (goodbye, #1 Mom mug) and make space for a unique life experience (hello, watercolor painting).

Mingle at the Mint

Take Mom to the Mingle at the Mint event, a pop-up shopping experience that includes exclusive vendors (past vendors have included Alexander Scott, Hampton’s Men’s Clothing, Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique and  Meredith A. Jackson Jewelry Boutique). Attendees will participate in a free gallery tour of “It’s Magic Time:  The Mint Museum Drama Guild in 1954,” which features memorabilia from various community theatre productions including “Elizabeth the Queen and A Sleep for Prisoners.”  The event is free, but you can register here. BYOV: Bring Your Own Vinyl

The BYOV: Bring Your Own Vinyl event happening at Petra’s allows Mom to bring out her old records and go down memory lane through music. She can gather those from her collection and Petra’s DJ Tober will spin them for her. It’s perfect for a pre-holiday dance party with Mom and is free, so just show up! May 9, 8-11 p.m.

Mother’s Day Floral & Fizz Event

Local sugary sweet spot, Hey Sugar Shop, will host a two-day Mother’s Day Floral & Fizz Event, during which you and Mom can learn the latest cookie cake trends while sipping mimosas. The event will include a full appetizer and dessert bar. After a fun afternoon, moms will also receive a delicious parting gift—a cookie cake.The cost is $75 per person or $125 for Mom and a guest. Wine Walk at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens

Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens will host a Mother’s Day Wine Walk on their beautiful grounds, with guests sampling five wines at stations placed throughout gardens. The gardens will be blooming with azaleas, hydrangeas and other colorful perennials, and attendees will get a Garden wine glass.  Tickets can be purchased here and the cost is $22 for members and $25 for nonmembers, plus a general admission fee for the garden ($12.95 for adults). Mothers and Daniel Stowe members are exempt from the general admission fee, but all others must pay both the event ticket price and the garden admission fee. May 12, noon-3 p.m. Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, 6500 South New Hope Rd., Belmont, NC

Listen to live music at The Wine Vault

Grab a table (or one of the surrounding benches) for you and Mom at The Wine Vault located at The Shoppes at University Place to listen to live music throughout Mother’s Day weekend. On May 12, a local musician named Rich will play rock music and on May 13, another local musician, Jared, will play country/acoustic folk music. While listening is free, wine by the glass starts at $6 and bottles are available starting at $13. May 12 and 13, 7-11 p.m. The Wine Vault at Shoppes at University Place, W.T. Mother’s Day 5K

Start the day early with Mom, by taking part in the H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery Mother’s Day 5K to promote a healthy lifestyle. Participants can choose a custom bib that not only includes the runner’s name, but a choice of the following: “I am a MOM” or “I run for MOM.” Moms can also get free mimosas and wine. You can register here and the cost is $40 up until the race; on race day the cost is $45. May 13, 8 a.m. (With a free kids dash at 9:15 a.m.). Symphony Park, 4400 Sharon Road.

Mother’s Day Brunch at The Ballantyne

Of course, Mom doesn’t want to cook on Mother’s Day, so it’s an easy decision to take her to a fancy brunch. The Mother’s Day Brunch at Gallery Restaurant at The Ballantyne will include a wide variety of items including tasty salads like roasted mushroom; small bites including salmon satay and entrée selections created by Chef Garrett Merck. There will also be mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, traditional breakfast items, seafood, carving stations and a cornucopia of desserts including strawberry shortcake, rhubarb almond tarts and banana pudding mousse. There will also be live music while dining. The cost is $95 per person, $40 for ages 5-12, and complimentary for ages 4 and under (plus tax and 24% service charge). Watercolor class

Get artsy with Mom by taking a watercolor class with Skillpop Charlotte, where you learn the basics of watercolor and take home a masterpiece of your very own. Previous watercolor classes have included Watercolor Fruit Prints, Floral Watercolors and Abstract Watercolor Prints. The Watercolor House Portraits class will take place on May 19 and costs $48.
