Zach Galifianakis trailer now out for upcoming Loomis Fargo heist movie

If you’ve lived in the Charlotte area for a long time, you may remember the $17 million Loomis Fargo heist of 1997.

If not, you may have at least heard that Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis have been making a movie here in NC about it.

Now, the new trailer for “Masterminds” (aka “Loomis Fargo”) was released online Monday by Relativity Media.

Don’t expect a “Fargo” here. It’s more “Dumb and Dumber”-level buffoonery, with slapstick comedy and outrageous action. It almost feels like the product of a “Saturday Night Live” skit that someone decided to turn into a feature film.

Then again, as one former Observer columnist put it, “There is no polite way to say this: These folks are not exactly the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.”

Here’s a quick recap of the Loomis Fargo story:

Loomis Fargo armored car driver David Scott Ghantt (Galifianakis) hijacked his truck’s money in October 1997. He and his accomplices in Gaston County proceeded to do pretty much everything the “How to Pull Off a Bank Robbery” handbook tells you not to do: They bought new cars and trucks, a new house and furniture store, Rolexes, diamond rings. They even deposited money still wrapped with the Loomis Fargo straps.

In the end, 16 defendants went to prison.

The movie was filmed primarily in Asheville and its surrounding areas last summer. Its due in theaters Aug. 7.
