P-Stone closed, Good Year going TedX and Potbelly’s and MODs coming

mhames@charlotteobserver.com

A closing, some openings and a temporary transformation in development news:

(1) The Philosopher’s Stone Tavern has closed. Apparently a note is taped to the door of the popular Elizabeth bar:  Unfortunately we have fallen on hard times. While it breaks our hearts to do this, we have no choice but to close our doors.

P-Stone opened 10 years ago. Legal records show that eviction proceedings had started against the neighborhood hangout.

(2) Good Year going TedX-style. You might have noticed some activity at the Good Year on the corner of Tryon and Stonewall. Crescent Communities eventually plans to knock it down for a new office tower, but until then it’s re-purposing the space into a TedX-style hall.

Crescent wants to host idea-driven lectures in the space, and plans to have its first one center on Crescent’s construction plans for uptown. (Crescent is also building the Whole Foods on Stonewall.) We love the innovation.

(3) Potbelly Sandwich Works in the works. This fast/casual chain popular in DC and NYC is now coming to Charlotte. Four TBA locations are under consideration. Potbelly’s has toasted sandwiches, salads, breakfast sandwiches, milkshakes, etc.

(4) MOD Pizza eyeing Steele Creek: The build-your-own-pizza franchise is planning to open at RiverGate Shopping Center. The concept: 11-inch pizzas, 30 toppings to choose from, baked for 3 minutes at 800 degrees.

(5) Updates: The new Amelie’s on N.C. 51, in Carmel Commons shopping center, is looking at a mid-May opening … Midwood Smokehouse is now hiring for its new Ballantyne location …
